In Cambridge, Ohio there were a few events with Sen. Sherrod Brown during the summer. The top debate with the senator was about making health insurance necessary for all young adults across the country.
For a lot of years, young uninsured Americans have gone to the emergency room and subsidized insured Americans, says the senator. Everyone on average has to pay $1000 more per year for their health insurance policy to take care the uninsured. That is why everyone should have health insurance and the senator argue about all younger, healthier people should have health insurance.
“Most young people that come for care at the trauma room can not pay for the service.”, responded, the chief executive officer at Barnesville Hospital.
Have a look at these statistics: The groups of people without health insurance in America are people between the ages of 18 to 29. There were over 30 million people between the ages of 18 to 34, who did not have any health insurance in 2007 and 2008. About half of the young workers are more likely to get their health insurance coverage from their work place.
Debt from student loans and other credit card debts are rising each year for students. Which mean more students are seeking work to try to pay off those debts and with the current weak economic conditions, more and more companies are offering unpaid internships.
Sen. Brown is particularly alarm with the amount of young adults going to college and universities who are uninsured and are not financially stable. In recent months the senator has begun a new legislation which will help create more community collage graduates and he also announced a new bill that will help students to refinance private loans.
The senator have made it to clear to everyone at the event about his belief of having all young adults health insurance coverage will not increase any more tax for low and middle class workers. First, the increase of Pell grants for every university and college students. Second, under the new bill, the students can use their parents’ health insurance plan until they reach the age of 26 or over. The senator last point was, if you are a low income family and can’t afford health insurance. The government will come in and help you pay most of the health insurance. The main point is to have everyone in the health insurance system.
In 26 states there are laws that let 20 something year’s old stay with their parents’ health insurance coverage. Just last year, there was a law that passed in Florida which let students to stay under their parents’ health insurance plan till they are 30 or older. Florida basically redefine the word “dependent” which let the policy holder add an additional person and pay for the additional premium for that person.
The bill was passed by the Senate’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee which made it mandates to private health insurance cover students with their parents’ health insurance plan until they reach 26 years old. The communications director in the administration’s Office of Health Reform told CNN that she thinks such talk will make it to the House bill. She also mentions, the health care policies that focus on the early preventions and build around young adults are on the work. At the moment, young people in low income families under 19 years old are eligible for Medicaid.
Young people should see the above proposals in the Senate and in the House. Seeing that should inspire many more young Americans to join in the discussions and health insurance reform advocacy. Before it is too late and we are force to learn it the harder way.
